Fireworks Send Thousands to Hospitals Yearly
The New Year is coming and you probably want to greet it with a big bang. But if you’re not careful, you could end up in a hospital emergency room instead.
This warning comes from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which said that fireworks and illegal explosives could bring tragedy to your family’s New Year celebration.
In the US alone, almost 8,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms yearly. About 40 percent of the victims are children under age 15.
“We encourage people to watch public fireworks and not use fireworks because of the hazards involved,” said Dr. Wyatt W. Decker, an emergency medicine physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “We most commonly treat second-degree burns to the hands from fireworks that were carelessly handled.”
The American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that fireworks cause about 2,000 eye injuries each year, about one-fourth of which result in permanent vision loss or blindness. There’s also the risk of fire, loss of fingers and limbs, and permanent hearing loss from mishandled fireworks.
To prevent fireworks-related injuries and the stress they cause that can ruin your face, here are some tips courtesy of Dermaxin, the better alternative to doctor-administered anti-wrinkle injections. This needle-free formula will help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and other signs of aging without the side effects and discomforts of popular cosmetics injections.
