Tips For a Great Fireworks Display
There's something very magical about a firework display, especially when it's on a grand scale. The 2009 New Year display in London cost a whopping £1.6 million and lasted just 10 minutes. But watching fireworks among friends and family in your own back yard can be pretty spectacular too.

If you're holding your own bonfire party this year, your budget may be smaller, but there's no reason the party cannot go off with an equally impressive bang. There's one vital key to holding a successful party and that's safety.

Fireworks can be fantastic and great fun if you give them the respect they deserve. If you don't, they'll bite and you'll end up with a nasty burn or worse. SO with that said here is a quick guide to having a safe fireworks display.

What should you buy?

If you're having a party in your garden, I'd say you'd probably want about 30 minutes worth of entertainment including lighting time. As a rough guide, Catherine wheels, fountains and Roman candles last about 20 - 40 seconds each from being lit. On the other hand rockets last less than 10 seconds! You will find that most major supermarkets will stock a wide range of fireworks that range in price from about £1 upto £7 or £8 for single items and upwards of £10 for packs. You can also find fireworks at smaller shops in your neighbourhood but make sure that these places bear the safety standard mark BS7114 as all sellers of fireworks must have a license to do so.

Want to build a bonfire?

If building a bonfire is your thing ensure it's at a safe distance from houses, fences and trees. Always light with firelighters and never flammable liquids. Only burn wood and paper making sure not to add anything once the bonfire is lit.

Lighting laws

One designated adult should light all the fireworks, at a safe distance from spectators. Read the packaging for guidance using a torch to do so. Also make sure you have a bucket of water or sand nearby just in case it is needed. Wearing eye protection and gloves would also be advisable. Additional safety tips are as follows:-

Keep fireworks in a closed box until they are ready for use.
Always light fireworks at arms length using a taper.
Never go back to a firework once lit.
Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.
Never ever let children handle fireworks.

So make sure to be safe and you will be sure to have a great time with your family and friends and enjoy the display.
