Why is the remote start setting off the alram?

Pontiac G5. Remote start used to work, but now it just sets off the alarm. What's the problem? Can the alarm or auto start be reset?

This can be from a number of problems.
Firstly, there can be a short in the power
circuit that the remote start is connected
into. Instead of starting the car, a short
can set off the alarm instead. This would
tend to indicate that you would have to look
to the wiring to the alarm.

The next problem would most likely be
in the remote starter control itself. Instead
of sending its signal to your starter circuit
it is sending out a signal that affects the
alarm. Most times this would be caused
by a harmonic radio frequency that triggers
your alarm, and not a voltage signal that
comes through the wiring. Remote starter
controls work on radio frequencies. Most
car systems can be affected by some of
those signals.

I once got new service information from
Motorola, and GE that informed me that
improper alignment of radio transmitters
could cause problems with the anti-lock
braking systems on cars. Next, I got
more information that such misaligned
transmitters could also interfere with the
remote control systems that operated
railroad locomotives, and later that such
problems with a transmitter could also
interfere with aircraft frequencies.

That was the day I learned that no longer
could any type of transmitter be 'tuned'
by a simple wattmeter, and frequency
counter. Now, it takes me having a $22k
spectrum analyzer to do what we used to
do with simple things, or even 'by ear'.

Portable transmitters of today are not
designed to be 'banged' around, dropped,
get wet, or even just very humid or they
can have their frequency disturbed. Even
just the use can cause components to
change value so that they don't work
exactly right. Things today are not built
to very rugged standards for the average
person.

I would suggest that you first have your
remote transmitter checked. If that is not
the problem, you will need to check your
entire wiring system for the alarm, and
that means even the auto computer. Any
electrical component, IC's, transistors,
resistors, capacitors, etc, can change
their values enough to allow for problems.
Even your auto ground system would need
to be checked carefully.

The best idea for this is to first get a good
schematic of your car wiring. Your best
way for this is to go to your local library,
in the Business, Science, Technology
department. There you can find many
auto service manuals. The best you can
find will be the Mitchell Automotive series
manuals. As you cannot check out these
books, you would need to find the one that
has your car's wiring diagrams, and copy
them with the copy machine at the library.
Most times I can get all I need for less
than a dollar. That way you can actually
find the alarm, and follow the electrical
wiring path to find a most likely area
where the problem can happen, and to
check, or change that.

If you cannot do this yourself, the cost would
be more to have it checked than if you just
bought another add-on remote starter system
to install to repalce the one that is malfunctioning.
